Brew Guide - Aeropress
The Aeropress is perfect for those of us that are tired of big machines and that want a small coffee maker to bring along when kayaking or hiking, or for those of us that simply want a delicious cup of coffee. The Aeropress is gaining praise from all over.
15 g coffee
250 g water
Brewing time: 2 minutes
1. INSERT THE FILTER AND RINSE IT – Use hot water; it rinses the filter better and heats up the cap. This also helps the filter stay in place when you attach the cap to the Aeropress.
2. ADD 15 GRAMS OF COFFEE – Always use freshly ground beans, and we suggest you invest in a grinder so that the coffee can be ground immediately before brewing. Determine the correct amount using a digital scale.
3. ADD A LITTLE WATER FOR MOISTURE – Don’t forget that the water will start pouring through the filter straight away, therefore place the Aeropress on your cup of pot from the start. Place everything on the scale and reset it before you start to pour. Make sure the water is at the correct temperature, about 95°C. Then add 50 grams of water. Being thorough will improve the flavor, smoothness, and all-round experience of your coffee
4. STIR THE COFFEE – It’s just like making hot chocolate: mixing coco directly with all of the milk makes it lumpy. But mixing just half of the milk, stirring, and adding the rest later dissolves the coco. That is what we are looking for here.
5. FILL WITH WATER UP TO THE EDGE – Since the water starts pouring straight through the filter it really helps to use a scale throughout the whole brewing process. You want to use a total of 250 grams of water to the 15 grams of coffee.
6. ATTACH THE PLUNGER – The dripping will seize as you attach the Aeropress and the coffee enters an extraction phase. Experiment with different extraction times to discover what best suits your preferences. Start around 30 seconds and work your way towards your favorite!
7. PRESS ALL THE COFFEE THROUGH THE FILTER – Press down on the plunger using an even force, pushing the coffee through the filter. Here you can also experiment with time, start with anywhere from 20 to 60 seconds. Using your body weight helps relieve stress from your elbows. Grab your favorite cup if you were not already brewing directly into it.
Dosing your filter coffee
The basic rule when we should be brew and dose coffee is to use 6 grams of coffee on deciliter water. Whether you dispense for bridge coffee, French Press, Chemex, V60 or Aeropress, you can use these guidelines. Here is a simple chart showing how much coffee we can use per deciliter water.
