The basic rule when we are going to brew and dose coffee is to use 6 grams of coffee to 1 decilitre of water. A lot of you use the "coffee measuring cup", and it is a good guideline. But, it is both inconsistent and unpredictable.
Instead, the number of tablespoons of ground coffee is a term we can use if we do not have the ability to weigh the coffee. The absolute best way to measure your coffee is to buy a scale (or use that kitchen scale that many of us have lying in the third drawer). The big advantage of the scale, second to accuracy, is that it can be easily scaled up according to how much water you use use.
Whether you are dosing for an electric brewer, french press, Chemex, V60 or Aeropress, you can use these guidelines.
Here is a simple diagram that shows how much coffee we can use per deciliter of water.
1 dl = 100 g water
1 tbsp = 6 g of coffee
Water = Coffee
100 g = 6 g
200 g = 12 g
300 g = 18 g
400 g = 24 g
500 g = 30 g (4 cups on a coffee maker)
600 g = 36 g
700 g = 42 g
750 g = 45 g (6 cups on a coffee maker)
800 g = 48 g
900 g = 54 g
1000 g = 60 g (8 cups on a coffee maker)
