Enveritas Responsibly Sourced

We love coffee. Not only what’s in the cup, but the craft behind it, the people who make it possible, and the nature it relies on. That’s why we are proud to share an important milestone in our work:

In 2025, we reached
the Enveritas Responsibly
Sourced status.
What this means

We have partnered with Enveritas, an independent non-profit organisation, to assess sustainability issues in our coffee supply chain.

Enveritas works globally to evaluate social, environmental and economic risks at farm level. Their approach combines satellite data, field assessments and local expertise to build a clear picture of where risks exist - and where improvement efforts matter most.

Thanks to this partnership, Enveritas has assessed the traceability and sustainability of 3,148,127 pounds (approximately 1,427,000 kg) of Johan & Nyström’s 2025 coffee purchases.

This means our entire coffee volume goes through risk assessment and verification.

Why we work with Enveritas

We work with an independent verification organisation, Enveritas, to better understand sustainability challenges for farmers in the regions where we source our coffee.

This matters - especially as new legislation makes it clear that sustainability claims must be backed by verified data. With Enveritas, we can speak clearly, transparently and responsibly about our coffee. Their sustainability standards cover more than 30 indicators, spanning environmental protection, labour conditions, farm economics and community well-being.

Continuous improvement, not shortcuts

Being “Responsibly Sourced” does not mean that every farm meets every sustainability standard today. What it does mean is that we have made clear financial and social commitments to support continuous improvement where it is most needed - and that we can show real progress over time.

Since 2022, Enveritas has carried out rolling verifications across our entire portfolio. We began by assessing around 20% of our volume each year, expanding steadily until all our coffee was included. To avoid unnecessary burden on producers, farm visits and verifications typically take place every second year - unless results show that earlier follow-up is needed.

Importantly, we cover the full cost of these verifications. There is no additional cost for the producers we work with - unlike many conventional certification schemes where the financial burden often falls on the farmer. This allows the focus to stay where it belongs: on real improvement, not on paying to participate.

If an assessment ever raises serious concerns, we choose to return sooner. So far, that has not been necessary.

A key requirement for reaching Responsibly Sourced status is active investment in improvement projects at origin. These projects are something we build together with producers - and revisit as needs evolve.

Real projects, real impact

During 2025, we have co-financed and supported several long-term improvement initiatives, including:

  • FAF Future Farmers - supporting the next generation of coffee producers in Brazil. Read more here.
  • Heza Repair Fund - reconstruction of a retaining wall at Heza Washing Station in Burundi after devastating flooding. Read more here.
  • PPE investment - providing protective equipment and training for the coffee producers working with Long Miles Coffee Project in Burundi.
  • Soil conservation and improvement for organic specialty coffee - at the Incahuasi cooperative in southern Peru, the focus is on restoring and strengthening soil health through organic fertilisation and better use of local resources. Read more here.
  • Strengthening coffee production through organic and environmentally friendly practices - at the Comicovel cooperative in Honduras, the project focuses on improving soil biology, nutrient uptake and productivity through organic methods - while making better use of coffee by-products.  Read more here.

Some projects continue over several years. Others are completed and replaced by new initiatives, defined together with producers. This ongoing work is a core part of Enveritas’ definition of continuous improvement.

Responsibility as progress

We are the roastery that refuses to settle. We challenge assumptions. We push quality forward. We roast coffee that proves responsibility isn’t a limit - it’s how progress happens.

Thanks to Enveritas, we can now say, clearly and credibly, that our coffee is: Responsibly Sourced.
